Penticton men's rugby team wins Okanagan League Championship title after nine years

Penticton's spirited rugby team brought home a big win this past weekend, staying undefeated for the first time in nine years.

Last Saturday, the Penticton Harlequins won the Okanagan League Championship title after beating the Vernon Jackals 31-24 in the final that took place at McNicoll Park, the Harlequins’ home field.

The Penticton men’s rugby team went undefeated 5-0 all season, and qualified for the coveted Saratoga Cup crowning the best team in the province.

“Winning that trophy was important for our club and the city," Brenden Ferreira, Harlequins head coach, said in a press release.

“We have been building back our men’s, women’s and junior teams and a victory like that at home is good momentum. The Harlequins are a big part of the Penticton community.”

Penticton's three rugby teams are always recruiting new or experienced players.

The 'Quins are now headed to Terrace for the Saratoga Cup, happening in August.

“It’s quite an expensive trip, and players have to take time off work to travel," said Abigail Woods, women's coach for the Harlequins.

“We are still looking for sponsors and doing fundraisers, and hope Penticton businesses will see how cool of a team we are and support us."
